Because there are so many good movies out there, it can be difficult to choose which one you want to watch. Instead of continuously scrolling through content for hours trying to make a choice, consider watching any of these three (all available on Netflix and elsewhere):
1. American Beauty: American Beauty is one of many instant classics released in the 1990’s and has won five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor (Kevin Spacey). The film follows the existential crisis of a father in suburbia whose sudden disenchantment with his ordinary job, family, and life cause him to re-evaluate what–if anything–actually matters. Filled with brilliantly scripted dialogue, cuttingly dark humor, and enough subplots to keep everyone interested, this film is a must see for movie lovers everywhere.
2. The Prestige: The Prestige is one of the most original stories ever to be transformed from novel into film. This captivating tale of competing American stage magicians in the 1800’s is filled with more plot twists and turns than seemingly any other of its kind, and it is the perfect film for anybody looking for a surprise ending. Featuring stellar performances from Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, and even David Bowie, this masterpiece is one that you’ll not only want to watch once, but need to watch twice.
3. To Kill a Mockingbird: Based on the classic American novel originally published by Harper Lee, the 1962 film adaptation of to Kill a Mockingbird captures the essence of the Deep South in the 1930’s with some of the most well-developed characters ever to be written. The story follows the struggles of a family trying to establish themselves while standing up for what’s right, and Gregory Peck’s portrayal of Atticus Finch was good enough to be named by the American Film Institute as the greatest movie hero of the 20th Century. Filled with conflict relating to poverty, race, crime, and the trials of tribulations of growing up, this film is both an important and interesting classic.
